Stitch Movie: When Does the New Lilo & Stitch Come Out in Portugal?
If you are a fan of the Stitch movie, get ready: the new live-action version of Lilo & Stitch already has a release date in Portugal. This beloved character is back on the big screen, ready to win over a new generation... and move those who grew up with him. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about the release date, what is different in this new movie and why it is still such a relevant story.
What Is the Stitch Movie?
The Stitch movie, as people so often search for it online, refers to the animated universe Disney created in 2002 with the original Lilo & Stitch. It told the story of a Hawaiian girl, Lilo, who adopts an unusual “dog” that turns out to be an alien genetic experiment: Stitch, also known as Experiment 626.
The movie stood out for its emotional approach, its memorable soundtrack featuring Elvis Presley songs, its tropical settings and, above all, its message of family, inclusion and empathy. It quickly became a Disney classic.
Now, in 2025, Disney is betting on this story again, but this time as a live-action version, following the trend of reimagining its biggest hits for a new audience.
When Does the New Lilo & Stitch Movie Come Out in Portugal?
The new version of the Stitch movie is scheduled to open in Portugal on May 22, 2025. This has already been confirmed by Disney Portugal and by NOS Cinemas.
The release comes a few days before the movie officially arrives on Disney+ in other countries, such as the US. So if you want to see it first in Portuguese movie theaters, this will be your chance.
It will be shown in the country's main movie theaters, with screenings in both the dubbed version and the original version with subtitles. You can already check showtimes on official websites such as Cinemas NOS or on online ticketing platforms.
Why Is This Release Generating So Much Excitement?
There are several reasons why the new Stitch movie is so eagerly awaited:
- Pure nostalgia: Many adults who are now between 25 and 40 grew up with Stitch as a central figure in their childhood.
- First live-action version: It is the first time this story will be told with real actors, using CGI to bring Stitch and the other alien elements to life.
- Timeless message: The story about family (“Ohana means family... and family means nobody gets left behind”) is still one of the most powerful ever told in an animated movie.
- Interest from younger viewers: There is a new young audience that has never seen the original, and for them this version will be their first encounter with Stitch.
Common Questions About the New Stitch Movie
Over the last few months, fans, both old and new, have raised many questions about the new release. Here are some of the most common:
Will It Be the Same as the Original 2002 Movie?
Not exactly. The story keeps the core elements (Lilo, Stitch, life in Hawaii), but there will be changes to suit the live-action format and a 2025 audience. Some supporting characters may be changed or left out.
Will Stitch Be Real or Computer-Generated?
Stitch will be created using CGI (computer-generated imagery), just like Simba in The Lion King or Dumbo in the movie of the same name. The first images released show a Stitch who is faithful to the original, but with more realistic textures.
Will It Be Released on Disney+ or Only in Theaters?
In Portugal, the movie is scheduled to open in theaters on March 12, 2025. It will only be available on Disney+ later. In the US, the streaming release is expected on May 25.
